NBA Playoff Update: The Race to the Finals

The NBA playoffs are in full swing. With the first round wrapping up, the conference semifinals are set to be intense as teams battle for a spot in the Finals.

Eastern Conference

In the East, the #1 seeded Miami Heat eliminated the Atlanta Hawks 4-1. Jimmy Butler led the way, averaging 30 points per game in the series. They'll face the Philadelphia 76ers in the semifinals after Philly knocked out the Toronto Raptors 4-2. Joel Embiid's return from injury will be key if the Sixers want to make the Conference Finals.

The other Eastern Conference matchup pits the Boston Celtics against the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks. Boston swept a depleted Brooklyn Nets team, while Milwaukee fended off a scrappy Chicago Bulls squad 4-1. The Celtics' stingy defense will be tested against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks' efficient scoring. This series could go the distance.

Western Conference

The West playoffs have seen some wild upsets already. The #1 seed Phoenix Suns took care of business against the New Orleans Pelicans, winning 4-2. However, the Dallas Mavericks shocked the basketball world by demolishing the Utah Jazz 4-2 behind Luka Doncic's offensive explosion. Doncic averaged 32 points per game in the series - a trouble sign for the Suns.

The Golden State Warriors convincingly dismissed the Denver Nuggets 4-1. Now they'll face a gritty Memphis Grizzlies team coming off a physical series win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Memphis' young core of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. won't back down from the Warriors' championship pedigree.

Playoff Predictions

As the second round gets underway, here are my predictions for how the conference finals will shape up:

East: Celtics defeat Bucks in 7 games

West: Warriors defeat Suns in 6 games

I'm picking the Celtics' defense and the Warriors' experience to win out. It would set up an NBA Finals for the ages between two historic franchises. But anything can happen in the playoffs!
