My Trip to Scotland
Scotland is a country I've always wanted to visit. The beautiful highlands, historic castles, and lively cities have beckoned me for years. Finally, last summer I was able to make the trip. It exceeded my expectations in every way.
Planning the Trip
Planning a trip to Scotland takes some preparation. Here are a few tips:
- Book accommodations well in advance, especially if visiting during peak season. Popular hotels and B&Bs book up quickly.
- Rent a car for maximum flexibility. Driving is the best way to experience the winding roads and remote landscapes.
- Pack for variable weather. The weather changes frequently, so bring layers and rain gear.
- Research top attractions ahead of time and note must-see sites. It's easy to underestimate how much there is to see and do.
Edinburgh
I started my trip in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital. This city has a dramatic setting with a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town.
Some highlights included:
- Climbing to Edinburgh Castle, which sits atop an extinct volcano in the center of the city
- Strolling along the Royal Mile and exploring the narrow alleys that branch off of it
- Admiring the neoclassical architecture of the New Town
- Taking in the sweeping views from Calton Hill
- Browsing the National Museum of Scotland's extensive collections
I also discovered that Edinburgh has a lively food scene. I tried local specialties like haggis and smoked salmon while dining at modern Scottish restaurants and cozy pubs.
The Highlands
After a few days in Edinburgh, I picked up my rental car and headed north to the Scottish Highlands. This region is known for its rugged natural beauty. I was awestruck by its mountains, glens, and lochs.
Some of my favorite Highlands highlights:
- Driving the winding roads through Glen Coe and the Cairngorms National Park
- Hiking through the hills to see waterfalls and sweeping vistas
- Visiting Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness
- Sampling single malt Scotch whiskies on a distillery tour
- Stargazing at night - the dark skies were incredible!
Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye was the crowning jewel of my trip. This island off Scotland's west coast has dramatic cliffs, fairy tale castles, and moody landscapes. I spent several days exploring its natural beauty.
Highlights included:
- Photographing the iconic Eilean Donan Castle
- Hiking the Old Man of Storr and Quiraing rock formations
- Visiting the picturesque village of Portree
- Renting a boat and sailing around Loch Coruisk amidst the mountains
- Sampling fresh seafood right from the harbor
The Isle of Skye exceeded my high expectations with its quintessential Scottish scenery. It was the perfect place to conclude my trip.
Reflecting on an Incredible Trip
As I flew home, I knew Scotland had made an indelible impression on me. Its rich history and culture combined with its wild, romantic landscapes had me hooked. I can't wait to return and explore more of this captivating country.
From world-class cities to remote islands, Scotland has it all. It's a trip I'll remember forever.
